UWS salutes fire heroes with $10,000
UWS has presented a cheque for $10 000 to the NSW Premier's Bushfire Appeal at the Greater Western Sydney Business Connection's 'Tribute to Firefighters' on Wednesday 20 February 2002.
NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner, Mr Phil Koperberg, was the special guest speaker at the tribute dinner.
The $10,000 donation from UWS will help restore the resources for emergency services and to assist people affected by the recent NSW bushfires.
On presenting the cheque, Professor Janice Reid, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney, praised the efforts of the emergency services.
"Volunteers, community agencies and staff of so many local organisations converged on the areas threatened or razed by fire to defend property, support residents, restore services, and help each other," Professor Reid said.
"It is fitting, if sadly so, that the Year of the Volunteer should have closed with such unstinting generosity, courage and commitment from all who joined battle or supported the firefighters and sufferers.
"To those who volunteered their time and energy we add our thanks to those of the wider community."
Electronic photographs of the launch are available to the media.
