Close shave for UWS supervisor

Date: 15/03/2002

Winmalee resident John Gurling is bravely venturing into hair free days with a total head shave for the Worlds Greatest Shave for a Cure today.

The World's Greatest Shave for a Cure is the Leukaemia Foundation's biggest annual fundraising event where participants shave or colour their hair to raise funds for leukaemia research and patient support.

The project supervisor for Capital Works and Facilities at the University of Western Sydney was challenged by his work colleagues to go bald for the cause, one colleague saying: "John has thick hair, like a typical 50s rocker with hair down to his shoulders, so we thought it would be great to see what he looks like underneath".

Now his eyes, once peering out beneath all the hair, will be revealed for the world to see.

"They challenged me to do it and I thought I'd take it up, especially since it is for such a great cause," Mr Gurling said.

Mr Gurling has raised $1150 with his most generous sponsor being a UWS contractor, John Brennan, who offered $50 for Mr Gurling to have his moustache shaved off as well.

"After working at UWS for 11 years, no-one will recognise the new, hairless me," Mr Gurling said.
