UWS scores a goal for indigenous sport at Blacktown
The Blacktown Campus of the University of Western Sydney has thrown its support behind indigenous sport, sponsoring this weekend's annual Cliff Lyons Challenge Cup.
The annual rugby league knockout competition has this year attracted nine Koori teams from around Sydney, and one entry from Walgett in north-western NSW, with the winners and runners up sharing in $3000 prize money. There will also be an under-16s match to introduce local youth to the competition.
The event has been named in honour of former National Rugby League star Cliff Lyons, who represented NSW in the State of Origin, and Australia in several test matches.
The Challenge Cup will be played at Francis Park, Richmond Road, Blacktown this Saturday 28th September from 9am.
Manager of the University's Aboriginal Education Centre at Blacktown, Ken Jurotte says the $10,000 will be used to purchase equipment for the event and fund organising costs.
"UWS recognises the importance of these types of sporting events for the indigenous community. It allows them to come together in the spirit of competition, and share their culture, strength and diversity with non-indigenous Australians in a positive way," says Mr Jurotte.
"In providing the indigenous community with financial support in sponsoring the Cliff Lyons Challenge Cup, UWS is demonstrating its commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the greater west on both an educational and social level," he says.
Provost of the UWS Blacktown Campus, Professor Robin Woellner, says the University places great importance on its links with indigenous peoples, and will continue to develop these links, particularly through the Aboriginal Education Centre.
"We see events such as the Cliff Lyons Cup as an affirmation of UWS' commitment and support of indigenous people. We hope the event raises awareness of the close links between the University and the local and regional indigenous communities."
The cheque presentation will be held at Building U1 on the Blacktown campus this Friday, 27th of September at 11.30am. Cliff Lyons will be among those present.
