UWS explains new uni admissions system to parents

Date: 16/06/2009

The recent changes surrounding university admission have left parents and students even more confused about the process of applying for a course. The University of Western Sydney is offering parents access to quality information to help them make informed choices about their child's future.

A free Parent Information Evening at the Campbelltown campus will be held on Tuesday 30 June, 2009. The evening will address considerations such as, the new Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), the pressure of picking a course, calculating the cost of a degree, applying for a place, and having a back-up-plan if students miss out.

The event will give parents of students in years 10 to 12 the chance to learn about UWS, including the range of courses on offer, academic entry requirements to UWS, and the services and facilities offered at the University's six teaching campuses.

Families in the Campbelltown, Camden, Fairfield, Liverpool and Bankstown areas are encouraged to attend.

At 7.30pm, a series of break-out sessions will provide parents, guardians and students with tailored information. Sessions include:
* Indigenous opportunities;
* Advanced study, scholarship and leadership prospects; and
* A question and answer panel

University Admissions staff will run through entry requirements for various courses, how to apply through the Universities Admissions Centre, and the options available if students are unsuccessful in gaining a place.

Parents and guardians will be able to talk one-on-one with University staff about the UWS experience and learn about the opportunities, services and information that is available to their children.

Students are more than welcome to attend the information evening with their parents.

The UWS Parent Information Evenings have proved popular in the past, so registrations are essential. For more information, contact the UWS Course Information Centre on 1300 897 669, email study@uws.edu.au or visit:
