UWS celebrates harmony with an art exhibition

Date: 02/07/2009

An art exhibition at the University of Western Sydney will help to promote acceptance, respect, harmony and understanding within Greater Western Sydney.

The Harmony Day Poster Competition, an annual event organized by Moving Forward Together Inc., calls on schools across NSW and ACT to participate in a poster competition to encourage community harmony.

Monica McMahon, UWS Curator, says the exhibition is a wonderful way of celebrating the talents of the young people.

"The competition has been a way for young people in our community to reflect on the issue of harmony in our society, as reflected by this year's competition theme, 'Growing together in harmony'," says Ms McMahon.

"This exhibition is a unique opportunity to witness Australian children's visual representations of a world that accepts and embraces Australia's cultural and religious diversity."

The Hon. Laurie Ferguson MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, will officially open the art exhibition. Mayor of Liverpool Council, Ms Wendy Waller, and Mayor of Bankstown City Council, Ms Tania Mihailuk, will also attend and take part in the exhibition opening.

The artworks can be viewed each weekday at the Margot Hardy Gallery, from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The exhibition concludes on the 24 July, 2009.
