UWS Open Forum: Is AIDS Over?

Date: 09/09/2009

The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, recently retired Justice of the High Court and renowned human rights champion, will deliver an address at the 2009 Open Forum series on Thursday 10 September, 5.30pm, at the UWS Parramatta Campus.

Media are invited to the lecture, entitled "Is AIDS Over?".

At the forum, Justice Kirby will speak about the prevention of AIDS and the challenges this issue presents from his many years of experience as a notable supporter of human rights and HIV/AIDS issues.

Over the years, Justice Kirby has held many prominent appointments on the issue; which include:

* 1988-92: served as a member of the Inaugural Global Commission on AIDS of the World Health Organisation
* 2002: chair of an Expert Group convened by UNAIDS and the High Commissioner for Human Rights on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights
* 2001-2: chairperson of the UNAIDS Expert Panel on HIV Testing of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations
* 2004: continuing member of the UNAIDS Global Reference Panel on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.

Former Australian Human Rights Commissioner and Director of Equity and Diversity at UWS, Dr Sev Ozdowski, will act as MC for the evening and will officially recognise the many achievements Justice Kirby has made, and celebrate the relationship he has maintained with the University by presenting him with the appointment of Adjunct Professor to the School of Law.

He will also be made a patron of the UWS Ally Network, which is a University endorsed group of staff and students who are committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture at UWS for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) community members.

"The issue of AIDS prevention is still a very pertinent issue in our world, but it has seemed to have disappeared from the public view," says Dr Ozdowski.

"The timely seminar will aim to put the issue of AIDS back on the agenda, and serve to further educate and update the community on this very important issue facing our generation and those to come."

The 2009 Open Forum Seminars, which run throughout the year, are hosted by the UWS Equity and Diversity unit. The series cover topical and contemporary social issues and aim to bring the UWS academic and the Greater Sydney community together.
