UWS honours former Justice of the High Court with Adjunct Professorship

Date: 10/09/2009

The University of Western Sydney will acknowledge its relationship with the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG by appointing him as Adjunct Professor to the School of Law.

The appointment ceremony will form part of a public lecture to be delivered by the Hon Michael Kirby on the theme of global AIDS prevention at the UWS Parramatta Campus this evening.

Professor Michael Adams, Head of the School of Law, says the appointment of the Hon Michael Kirby is in recognition of the significant contribution he has made to the UWS School of Law.

"On behalf of the UWS community, we are honoured to have one of Australia's leading jurists formally connected with the School of Law through the Adjunct Professorship," says Professor Adams.

"Over a long period of time, the Hon Michael Kirby has been very supportive of UWS by providing guidance and wisdom to staff and students, and also speaking at a number of public lectures and attending many University events and functions."

In addition to accepting his role as Adjunct Professor, the Hon Michael Kirby will be announced as patron of the UWS Ally Network - a University endorsed group of staff and students who are committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture at UWS for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) community members.

The formal recognition of patron to the Ally Network will further acknowledge the Hon Michael Kirby's work as an avid human rights and HIV/AIDS advocate - a campaign which spans more than a decade. It will also affirm the Hon Michael Kirby's current membership of the UNAIDS Global Reference Panel on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.

Members of the public have the opportunity to hear the Hon Michael Kirby speak about the important world issue of AIDS prevention at the UWS Open Forum.

The 2009 Open Forum series, hosted by UWS Equity and Diversity, has commemorated a Year of Respect and Inclusion - a celebration that reinforces the University's commitment to inclusiveness and equity of access for all. This lecture will mark the close of the series for 2009.

Note to journalists: Journalists are welcome to attend the Open Forum to cover the Hon Michael Kirby's visit and lecture. At the conclusion of the forum at 7.15pm, media will have the opportunity to interview and photograph Justice Kirby.

A photographer from the University of Western Sydney will also be attending. Journalists can contact the UWS Media Unit to receive electronic copies of any official photos from the day.
