Australian Treasury Secretary Ken Henry to address 'Governing the Economy' symposium

Date: 29/10/2009

A host of institutional leaders including Dr Ken Henry, Gary Banks, Bernie Fraser and Professor Warwick McKibbin will shine a light on the challenges of governing a modern economy at a symposium being held in Sydney on Monday 30 November, beginning 9am.

'Governing the Economy: the challenges and the possibilities' is being hosted by the Whitlam Institute, in partnership with the School of Economics and Finance at the University of Western Sydney.

The symposium offers a rare opportunity to hear the key players in our economic management address the future directions for governing the Australian economy.

Director of the Whitlam Institute, Mr Eric Sidoti, says there is perhaps no greater time to address the challenges confronting contemporary economic governance.

"The economic rollercoaster ride experienced over the last two years thanks to the global financial crisis has once again put national and international economic and fiscal policy, and governing and regulatory practices, firmly under the spotlight," he says.

"This symposium promises to be one of the more significant economic gatherings for 2009. While it will inevitably reflect upon the GFC experience, the emphasis is on the emerging challenges and options that may be available to policy-makers in charting the way ahead."

'Governing the Economy' speakers include:

* Dr Ken Henry, Secretary, Australian Treasury

* Gary Banks, Chair, Productivity Commission

* Bernie Fraser, Former Treasury Secretary and Former Governor, Reserve Bank of Australia

* Professor Warwick McKibbin, Director, Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis, Australian National University, and Board member, Reserve Bank of Australia.

There will also be a lunchtime session to discuss 'Reporting the Economy'.

Indicative of the symposium's importance is that it is being sponsored by a number of Australia's major firms - including Macquarie Bank, Deutsche Bank, Energy Australia, and Mitchell Communications Group - and is already attracting the participation of senior policy makers, economists, executives and managers, and leaders from the not-for-profit sector.

Symposium Patron, Mr John Phillips, AO, Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney, will open the forum.

Closing the day's proceedings will be UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, AM.
