World renowned pianist to perform at UWS

Date: 30/10/2002

Western Sydney residents will have a rare opportunity to see acclaimed concert pianist Roger Woodward next month, in a special concert at the University of Western Sydney's Hawkesbury campus.

UWS Business Development Manager , Jo Hibbert, says Mr Woodward will appear for one night only, during the Hawkesbury City Council's 'Fruits of the Hawkesbury Festival'.

"Mr Woodward will perform some of his favourite works by composers Chopin and Debussy on the University's grand piano at Memorial Hall," Ms Hibbert says.

"It promises to be an intimate evening of music from a man, described as one of Australia's 'living national treasures'".

Ms Hibbert says eight of the Hawkesbury region's up-and-coming music students have also been chosen for a Master Class with Roger Woodward, where they'll receive personalised instruction.

"It's a unique chance for those students to get some free guidance on their compositions or performances from one of the world's leading pianists," Ms Hibbert says.

"Mr Woodward enjoys working with young people in these types of classes. His only criteria for those taking part is that they must have a passion for music."

Ms Hibbert says the event, being run in conjunction with the Hawkesbury City Council, is part of a campaign to bring high quality arts programs to the region.

"The Memorial Hall at the Hawkesbury campus has played host to a range of concerts, plays and artistic events over the years, and it's a privilege to have someone of Roger Woodward's calibre performing there for the local community," Ms Hibbert says.

Tickets for the performance are available for $22 or $16.50 concession, through Ms Jo Hibbert on 02-9685 9851, the Hawkesbury City Council (enquiries to Prue Charlton 02-4560 4434), or through Crazies Café at Richmond.
