Seminar highlights job opportunities for people with disabilities

Date: 06/11/2002

People with disabilities will gain practical advice on how to secure their dream job at a free seminar to be held at the Lidcombe Catholic Workmen's Club on 16 November 2002.

The Setting Directions Employment Seminar will provide hands-on information on resume writing skills, interviewing techniques, negotiating workplace adjustments, job search strategies and creative ways of approaching potential employers.

The seminar also gives advice about when and how to disclose your disability when applying for jobs and your legal employment rights and responsibilities.

Employers are welcome to attend the seminar to hear about how they can make minor, inexpensive adjustments to their workplace to accommodate people with disabilities.

Sandra Norris, Head of the Counselling and Disabilities Services at the University of Western Sydney (UWS) is part of the Organising Committee behind the seminar.

"The seminar will also include real-life case studies where employers and workers with disabilities talk about their success stories," Ms Norris says.

The Regional Disability Liaison Officer for Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, Ms Anna Mungovan, urges people with a disability who are considering applying for a job to attend the seminar. Disability service providers are also welcome to attend.

Setting Directions 2002 is funded by the Regional Disability Liaison Officer initiative. Ms Mungovan's position is supported by the University of Western Sydney and is based at the University's Bankstown campus.

The seminar is supported by the Australian National University, Employers Making a Difference (EMAD), NSW Department of Education and Training, TAFE NSW, University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney.
